Eyes are the greatest and most beautiful gift of Almighty God to the human beings. Even after our death, still our eyes live and can help a blind person to enjoy the world. So many people die each day and the bodies are simply buried or burnt. Those who give vision to the blind can truly attain spiritual fulfilment.
Eye donations are used for cornea transplants. The cornea is the clear outer covering of the eye. Through injury or disease it can become cloudy, causing blindness. Almost anyone from the ages of 1-75 can be an eye donor, even if you wear glasses or have poor vision. If is important to tell your family about your eye donation. Families are not charged or paid money for donations.
People using spectacles, hypertensives and diabetes also can donate eyes. Only the cornea if to transplanted. Death due to infections because of viz. rabies, syphilis, septicemia, infectious hepatitis and AIDS, cannot be a donor. Also, Death due to unknown causes.
Precautions after Death
Turn off the fans and keep Air-conditioner on if you have. Close the eyes lids gently and keep a moist cloth over eyes. If possible, apply antibiotic eye drops periodically in the deceased’s eyes to reduce the chance of any infection. Raise head with a pillow and call the nearest Eye Bank. Eyes should be donated within 6-8 hours after death. If the person has not taken a pledge for eye donation, then next of Kin or relatives can donates the eyes of the death person.
